Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: I am a 31 year old female who just lost about 50 lbs over 9 months and I now have low blood pressure should I be worried. I went to the Dr today and she is having me keep a log of my blood pressure once a day for 2 weeks and then come back. I do get dizzy when I stand but it only lasts a few seconds and then I feel better. Do you treat low blood pressure? Can it be dangerous.

Brief Answer:
Orthostatic hypotension

Detailed Answer:
Greetings and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Well, dropping more than 10-20% of the total body weight over 6-12 months may be indicative of some physiological changes, but some tests would be recommended, this is my opinion. A simple complete blood count and a complete biochemical analysis should be performed.

As for the other problem, this is called orthostatic hypotension, which means that due to brisk changes in posture, there is a sudden drop of the blood pressure due to redistribuition of the body fluids. Therefore, this could be accompanied with headache, dizzines and darkness in vision. You should not be worried, it is a benign phenomenon. Merely, you should assume the standing position slowly, assuming a sitting position for 20-30 seconds and then standing up slowly. I think your doctor is right, about the diary. You can either do that, or be put on a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, to see how the blood pressure trends within a day. Also, you should keep yourself with appropriate calories and hydrated at all times.

I hope my answer is helpful. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton

Brief Answer:
Normal blood pressures provided

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

Well, normal blood pressure figures are 100-139/60-89 mmHg. Normally, anything less or more than these figures are considered abnormal. But, I would remind you that blood pressure is a very variable component of the organism, and can variate in various times of the day. Some people, especially women, may have a blood pressure of 90/60 mmHg and it is considered normal. Arbitrarely, I would recommend you to go to the emergecy room if the systolic blood pressure are under 80 mmHg.

I hope this additional information helps.

Kind regards,
Dr. Meriton
