Question: Hi, my 17 month old son is having loose motions since past two days, 2-3 times in a day, he is cranky at times, puts everything in his mouth and not eating very well. At times he is fine and happy and running around. First day he vomited a bit, so we gave him domstal (his ped had recommended that earlier). Next day loose motions started. Tried giving him banana. He is still very fussy about food and doesnt eat everything that we give. What should I do?

Brief Answer: Relax Detailed Answer: Detailed Answer: Hi Usually loose stools and vomiting takes 5 days to settle. It's usually viral unless there is blood in stools. You can continue the current medications and add zinc drops 0.5 ml once daily. You can give him breast feeds along with rice based foods like gruel, porridge. Curd is good for loose stools but restrict plain milk intake Give him plenty of ORS like electral in sips every few minutes to keep him hydrated and make sure he passes atleast 6times urine. Don't worry it will settle soon. If he becomes very dull with low urine output you may need to admit him for iv fluids. But if he is active and playful , nothing to worry. Domstal syrup can be given for vomiting. Regards Dr Arun
