Suggest Treatment For Lightheadedness Issues, Stomach Pain And Blood In Stools

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: I've been having lightheadedness issues and stomach pain lately and was prescribed amoxicillin but ended up being taken off of it due to severe stomach issues. As of today my stomach issues have gone away quite a bit but they are still definitely there and this morning I have some weird looking stool. I'm not sure how clearly the picture will show it but it almost looks like a large red bead attached to my stool along with many other smaller red beads in my stool. Not sure what's going on or if it's anything to be concerned with, please let me know. Thank you for your help.

Brief Answer: Please provide the requested details... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through the picture although it was not clear enough and the red beads seem to be blood. I want to go to your medical history step by step before running into final conclusions without being unnecessarily alarmed. Can you please provide the following info of yours? That can help me assist you further: - You are saying to be suffering of lightheartedness and stomach pain, for which you have been prescribed amoxicillin. Did the doctor who prescribed it tell if you had any infection (ENT or GI or uro-genital tracts)? Amoxicillin is a wide broad antibiotic used to treat infections. That's why I am asking why it was prescribed. - Once started amoxicillin, you have had stomach issues. Usually, diarrhea and abdominal cramps are associated with amoxicillin use. Can you please give details of your stomach issues: 1) did you experience diarrhea or constipation or alternating diarrhea/constipation? 2) did you have abdominal cramps? 3) can you check your anal area and do you notice any bump there (hemorrhoids)? 4) have you been eating/drinking beets, tomato juice, cranberries, or cocktail drinks with added coloring? If you have been experiencing constipation and passing hard stool, that could explain the red beads you have noticed in your stool. Passing hard stool could have triggered hemorrhoids and resulting with blood in stool. Looking forward to have the requested details in for further assistance! Dr.Albana

Thanks for the response. I was prescribed amoxicillin due to a sinus infection the general physician thought I had. After taking the medicine for a week my stomach pain was so severe I could barely move. This lead to having no appetite and not being able to drink anything so my bowel movements ceased to exist for those few days. I did experience my stool getting softer like it is right now but never had diarrhea or constipation. As far as my current eating habits I have been eating a lot of strawberries, bananas, blueberries, blackberries, protein shakes and yogurts. The severe stomach pain was at its peak on Monday and Tuesday and I was told to stop taking the medication Tuesday. The stomach pain has definitely calmed down since then but it's still there. Please let me know if you need anymore information/clarification from me. Thanks a bunch!

Brief Answer: Most probably due to berries you've been eating... Detailed Answer: Hi, If this is your case, then, most probably the red beads could be related to strawberries, blackberries you have been eating these days. However, I still insist to get your anus checked for hemorrhoids in order to exclude blood from hemorrhoids. You can do a self-check by using your finger or a mirror to check for bumps (hemorrhoids) yourself. I suggest to stop eating berries for 1 week and check if you would be noticing red beads in your stool during this time. In case the red beads will still appear, I suggest to get further checked by proctologist/GI specialist and to consider doing endoscopy to exclude hemorrhoids or anal fissure. Hope it was of help! Let me know if you have other queries! I'd be happy to assist you further! Dr.Albana

Thank you very much! Would that be considered a serious medical condition or something easily treatable? Also am I to stop eating all berries or just blueberries?

Brief Answer: Hemorrhoids/anal fissures not serious conditions.. Detailed Answer: Hi there, If hemorrhoids or anal fissures will be confirmed, they are not serious medical conditions. However, they need to get properly treated. I still insist to schedule colonoscopy to rule out rectal polyps. I suggest to stop all berries for just 1 week to see if there will be still red beads in stool. Dr.Albana

so if I stop for one week and I don't see anymore red beads in my stool then I am good and would not need to schedule a doctor appointment? Or I should still schedule one regardless?

Brief Answer: Still need to know if you have hemorrhoids... Detailed Answer: Hi, Yes, if you stop for one week and do not see anymore red beads in your stool, then, nothing to be worried about. However, you still haven't mentioned whether you have anal bumps (hemorrhoids or not). If no hemorrhoids, no need to schedule doctor appointment. If hemorrhoids are present, I'd advise to schedule an appointment to evaluate them further. Thank you! Dr.Albana
