Suggest Treatment For Ligament Injury On Knee

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: I had ligament injuries twice at left knee back in 1996 and 1998 while playing basketball and football respectively. Visited orthopedic physician and his advice was 'if you want to continue sports seriously go for surgery, else move on carefully, you may face challenges at old stage'. I was not in position to afford time and cost for the surgery, I moved on. I used to be very active in outdoor sports and gym. For those injuries I started limiting my sports and movements and naturally in regular activities (and in few remaining sports with me like badminton and cricket) I started giving more pressure over my right leg to save left one. In 2013 I started feeling severe pain in right knee and doctors said I am having kind of arthritis there (reduced space kind of problem) due to unbalanced pressure over right knee. They asked me to have some regular exercise to build up stronger muscle around knees and asked me to manage a schedule for surgery asap. Came to know from different sources that these sort of orthopedics surgery often fail to solve the problem, rather trigger new issues, sorry, I have no idea there. Can I have your expert opinion on what I should do now?
On a separate note, One of my colleagues recently has fallen in an accident and got ligament injury in left knee. She is going to visit a specialized orthopedics hospital in XXXXXXX (India). She suggested me to share few of my documents with her so that she would try to consult on the same with her doctor there. If I agree, what kind of medical reports or diagnostic data would help the doctor to have adequate understanding over my status?

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query in detail and i concluded that you want to know about two things; First, outcome of orthopedic surgery AND second, documents that need to be shared with orthopedic doctor to get an idea about your health. I will take them one by one.

> First, about orthopedic surgery:
Any surgery that you undergo has some complications. No surgery is absolutely free of complications. In orthopedic surgery extra caution is needed. Not all surgeons are expert in all orthopedic surgeries. Yes, chances of delayed complications are slightly higher in this case due to sophisticated surgery of joints. After joint surgeries you need to take extra caution and care else problem occurs again or complication occurs. You can take 2-3 opinions from different doctors so that you can decide easily BUT at the same time do not take so many opinions else you will get confused. So to minimize the chances you need to do three things:
1. Find a doctor who is expert in knee surgeries. Chances of complications reduce to minimal if an expert in particular sub-specialty is dealing.
2. Find anyone in your friends, relatives or colleagues who had such problem and had undergone surgery. He/She will give you best followup.
3. Follow advise of doctor. No matter how hard they will be.

> Second, about documents:

Following things you can give:

a. Take a paper and briefly write all your problems related to knee on it. They should include following things at least (you can add more):-
*Symptoms you encounter
*Duration of problem
*How problem started
*Treatment taken so far for it
*Outcome of the treatment
*Any past history of long term illness like heart attack, TB, hepatitis, etc
* Any family history of disease
*History of alcohol, smoke, drug intake
*Medications taken so far

These will help the attending doctor to understand the nature of illness. Also you should make sure that your colleague reads it once so that she can easily communicate with the doctor.

b. Take photographs of all the tests you had undergone so far, specially CBC, clotting profile and imagings like X-rays, CT scan, MRI etc. Write them over a DVD and give that as well. DO NOT give original reports because if they are lost then you will be in a problem.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer. Wish you good health.
