Suggest Treatment For Lactose Intolerance And Flatulence

Question: Dear Doc

I am not sure but it seems like I might be experiencing some effects of lactose intolerance. I have never been that way before in my life. \ But some months ago I cut out milk from my diet which up to that point had been skim 1%or 2% milk and switched to almond milk. I have recently learned that Almonds and other nuts high in poly unsaturated fats might be having an adverse effect on my testosterone levels. (I am 55) So still wanting to make protein smoothies I bought some whole organic milk and had some last night. Maybe 4oz. with a small piece of pumpkin pie at 11PM EST. About an hour later I started having some very sharp pains (at one to two minutes apart) in my upper left stomach area. This has been going on now for about 8hrs. I also in that period of time I felt hungry so getting up at 3AM I had a Clif bar and some more milk. About 4 more oz. Have also experienced some loud girgling in my stomach as well. Did got to the bathroom, and passed a good stool but still in pain. What do you think? And what should I do to stop this tremendously sharp stabbing pain I am experiencing?

Brief Answer:
Most important question is the consistency of the stool passed

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Well, after reading your scenario and the sequence of events, I have a few questions :

1. You said you passed stool after your symptoms emerged, what was the consistency of your stool ? And how was it different from your usual stools ?

2. Did you have an increased urge to pass your bowels soon after the consumption of the milk ?

3. Have you experienced an increased amount of flatulence since taking the milk or milk products ?

I look forward to hearing from you in order to help you further, and guide you towards a more accurate diagnosis.

Best wishes.

Stool was solid and initiated by me. I am a paraplegic T4 so my ability to analyze what is going on is very limited below my injury level. I short, I cathed for my bladder, did my morning bowel program abut 5 hrs too early but thought that might help if it were a food born issue. No flatulence ….but burping I have had acting as somewhat of a pressure release.

Brief Answer:
In my opinion you do not have lactose intolerance sir

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again sir.

Your symptoms do not add up or direct to the possibility of you being lactose intolerant. In past, with solid stool, a lot of conditions are ruled out.

I would recommend a colonoscopy or a consultation with a gastroenterologist to make sure all is well in your colon, and also to ensure your abdominal pain is not diet or lifestyle related.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write to me for any further clarifications, I'm always here to help.

Best wishes.
