Question: HI, I`m 71yoa, I weigh 105lbs, I`m 5ft 7in. The only medication I am on is Plavixx.. I never am hungry, yesterday am I got up, ate a biscuit with a sausage XXXXXXX in it, that was it for the rest of the day, wasn`t hungry. I`ve lost a little over 10lbs in the last couple of months becuase of having no appatite. Nothing has happened to cause my loss of appitite that I know of. I also have copd, I`m not on o2 for it although I use it at nite. Do you think that Megestrol mite help me ? I know it`s used for cancer but maybe it`ll help.
I hope I`ve told you enough info, if I haven`t please let me know. Thanks a lot for your time..... XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Any weight loss accompanied by loss of appetite has to be investigated.

Detailed Answer:
Hi welcome to HCM,
Any weight loss accompanied by loss of appetite has to be investigated. No Megestrol which is a chemical progesterone is not the answer for you. We have to find a cause. I would suggest you get some simple tests done first--thyroid, haemogram (blood picture), routine urine and routine stools. If these are normal then further evaluation may be required. Meanwhile please tell me if your bowel habits are altered, are there any stomach complaints, anything else you would like to tell me?
Please take a good multivitamin/mineral preparation so that you do not develop a deficiency--regards

Bowel movements are basically the same, the only thing wrong with me is copd. Losing weight is common in people with copd. I just just like to buy something to stimulate my appetite.

Thanks a lot for any information you can give me....... XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Ok, please buy any liver stimulant containing Silymarin/ methionine.

Detailed Answer:
Ok, please buy any liver stimulant containing Silymarin/ methionine. You can also try Cyproheptidine. It is a good appetite stimulant. But take it for a short while--say two weeks.
Natural method of improving appetite(safer to try this first)--try boiling water with ginger, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, fennel seeds and cardamom--all a tsf each powdered. Reduce to about one big glass. Divide and drink this water three times before meals--it should help.
Take care of your COPD with nebulisation.
Hope this helps--regards
