Question: My mother is about 74. She is diabetic and cardiac patient for nearly 30 years. On 1996 she underwent a Cabg. Ever since then due to controlled diet and regular medication she is fine. Her sugar is within normal range. Its almost 20 years post surgery and her sugar creat and lipid profile are fine. Rather sometimes she developed bit of hypoglycemic symptoms. She had developed artheritis like joint pain which keeps coming and going. Since last 1 day she has started complaining about pain in back which extends till the foot. This is only in the right foot. Sometimes heaviness of foot. I asked her very clearly and she said its a feeling of heaviness and not numbness. By wearing a knee cap she feels better. Can you suggest me what kind of problem this might be?

Brief Answer:
Osteoarthritis of the knee and spine

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

She could be suffering from Osteoarthritis of the knee and possibly involvement of spine as well causing spondylosis.

It is best for her to avoid squatting, cross leg sitting, climbing stairs, kneeling. Apply hot packs to the painful regions intermittently. Knee cap can be worn.

Do get xrays of her cervical spine, lumbosacral spine and knee joint to look for the problem which will help to decide which is affected most.

She can take Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day for 5 days after meals and Tablet Ranitidine 150mg twice a day for 5 days before meals.

I hope I have answered your query.
