Suggest Treatment For Itchy White Lump Behind The Ears

default
Posted on Tue, 5 May 2015
Question: My husband has a itchy white lump on crease behind ear. Wondering if this is lymph node or spider bite? He has complained of being tired. I think it is a lymph node and he is fighting an infection. He said both ears have been itching for about a month. He did start acupuncture a month ago also. He has been seeming to be sneezing a bit of a stuffy nose too, but when I ask if he isn't feeling good he says he is fine. He is a police officer and had to deal with a deceased individual who was about 3 months dead in a 80 degree trailer. The body had liquefied and the stench was unbearable. Could he have developed a sinus infection from this? He never complains about anything, so it must be itching very badly.

Brief Answer:
Possible infected sebaceous cyst/lymph node...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through the photo of XXXXXXX your husband, and noted the lump behind his ear. It seems to be an infected sebaceous cyst or boil or even infected lymph node. They are commonly appearing especially when accompanying ear infection or local (skin) infection/inflammation (as in case of allergy).

May I know if he is having:
- pain in his ear apart itching?
- any discharge from the lump or ear?
- fever? or flu like symptoms?
- is the lump itchy too apart other parts of ear?

Meanwhile, I advise to:
- apply anti-itching (anti-hystaminic) ointment locally
- take oral anti-hystamines for itching
- anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. paracetamol or ibuprofen)

If it won't disappear in few days, then, he needs a course of oral antibiotics, but need prescription from his doctor. Further evaluations by ENT specialist is required then to see changes in middle/inner ear too.

Wish fast recovery!

No pain, no discharge, no flu like symptoms. The itch is separate and the other ear itched for awhile with no lump.

Brief Answer:
Apply anti-septic lotion and anti-itching ointment locally for few more day

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Ok, then, it might be possible allergy or due to insect bite. I advise to use antiseptic lotion locally (containing iodine) and anti-itching ointment for a few days to a couple of weeks and observe the changes.

Wish fast recovery!
