Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: Hi

I had allergy on my fingers since last one and a half year, but last 4 months back the allergy became worse and it used to itch. I used to scrape the itched area sometimes with my fingers and now the area has turned completely white now.

What is happening to my skin?

Brief Answer:
Vitiligo; topical mometasone furoate

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

i have gone through your query and i have also reviewed the image.

i can see a depigmented patch in this image. This seems like vitiligo.

I suggest you to use a moderately potent topical steroid e.g mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment, once daily.

Regards

Brief Answer:
Response is expected by 6-8 weeks of regular use

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Topical steroid e.g mometasone furoate 0.1%, is first line treatments for focal patches of vitiligo.
Topical immunomodulators e.g tacrolimus 0.1% ointment, may also be added. You may use it twice daily i.e 8 AM and 2 PM. Rub it in.
Use Mometasone furoate 0.1% ointment once daily at night.
Vitiligo is slow to respond. It may take 6-8 weeks for a noticeable response and 3-4 months for a complete response.
There are no side effects with this treatment.
Follow up with a dermatologist in your region. You can share my discussion with him/her.
Psoralens, Phototherapy are other treatment modalities that can be tried if the patch does'nt respond with first line treatments i.e topical steroids and topical immunomodulators.
Surgical modalities like Punch grafting, suction blister grafting etc can be considered later in medically non-responsive patients with stable vitiligo patches.

Regards
