Suggest Treatment For Itchy, Prickly Sensation On Labia Majora

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I am a non-pregnant 26 y/o female with no medical conditions. For about a month now I have had an itchy, prickly sensation on my labia majora. I also have discharge and inner itching so I went to the gyno and he did a culture and found Group Strep B. He treated me for the Strep with Cleocin ovules, and each time that didnt work, he would prescribe it again. I took cleocin a total of 3 times, 3 ovules each time. Finally he prescribed me Amoxicilin and probiotics which I am taking now. I have been taking it for 2 days (4 pills total) but the symptoms seem to persist. My labia is also sensitive/sore to the touch and slightly swollen, and I have had a thick white discharge. I have not had any sex recently or any new partners. The skin doesn't look any noticeably different to me.

Brief Answer:
Candida co-infection to be determined...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

You are saying that the doctor ran a culture of vaginal discharge where Group B Strep was found. The therapy consists of:
- oral antibiotics according to the sensitivity testing (Amoxicillin in your case)
- vaginal ovules (if Cleocin ovules failed to get symptoms relieved, other ovules should be prescribed with a composition medications as per sensitivity testing)
- I also prescribe vaginal cream to my patients along with ovules to help reduce the symptoms

The thick white discharge you have developed now is indicative for candida co-infection. I usually advise my patients to run culture of vagina discharge for both bacterial and fungal (candida) infection in order to take proper treatment. In your case, you can discuss with your doctor about candida-co-infection as you might need oral anti-fungal medications (e.g. fluconazole) apart taking anti-biotics (Amoxicillin).

Probiotics will help normalize intestinal flora due to Amoxicillin use.

Hope it was of help!

Thank you for your response. I forgot to mention that before the ovules, my Dr prescribed diflucan over the phone, which I took 2 doses of one week apart. Then when I saw my gyno, he said it was not yeast, but strep. How soon does amoxicillin usually take effect? Its been 3 days and no change. Is the prickly sensation conducive with stre?p

Brief Answer:
Antibiotic resistence to consider. ...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for following up.

Before going further, can you upload the reports of the tests (culture and sensitivity testing ) you did?

Three days is not enough to get healed. However, this depends on the severity of infection.

If after completing the first treatment, you will not have improvement, should discuss with your doctor to get another treatment with amoxicillin or change therapy, choose another sensitive antibiotic as per sensitivity testing.

Please bare in mind that there is always the possibility to get resistance and the choosen antibiotic won't work.

Wish fast recovery!

I do not have access to the test reports. My doctors office will charge me to obtain them. What is the name of the cream you usually prescribe for this type of infection? Thanks
