Suggest Treatment For Itching And Swelling In The Legs

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Feb 2017
Question: I am having problems with my legs. I stay swollen. My legs and ankles are really swollen and red. They are tender to the touch. They feel warm and itch at times. I am on my feet a lot but when I get off work I am really swollen. All of this is below the knee. The only thing that helps is completely being off of them. I am sharing a picture of them after being completely off my feet for 4 hours. They are still very red but some of the swelling has gone down. What on earth is causing this and what can I do about it?

Brief Answer:
NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the query.
I have gone through your medical history and the attached photograph.

The legs and ankles are considerably swollen and red.

These are signs of inflammation of the soft tissues. The fact that it is warm signifies that there may be a underlying infection (cellulitis). This may or may not be associated with raised blood sugar levels and deranged kidney functions.

Another possibility is a raised uric acid levels in blood. This may also cause reddened and swollen legs.

Deep vein thrombosis of the legs also can cause swollen legs.

Considering these above mentioned possibilities i would suggest you to get the following investigations done.

1.Complete blood count including hemogram, blood sugar levels.
2. Renal function tests
3.Serum uric acid levels.
4.Venous color doppler of both lower limbs.

Take anti inflammatory, analgesic tablets till then.

Avoid applying anything warm. Ice packs will help.

Keep the legs elevated over the pillow as far as possible.

Do let me know once the reports are ready.

I hope the answer was helpful to you.

Thank you.
Best wishes.
