Suggest Treatment For Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Posted on Tue, 17 Oct 2017
Question: I was previously diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and put on a low FODMAPS diet, including avoiding dairy. Now I have been diagnosed with diverticulitis (via CT scan of abdomen) with treatment of liquid Carafate (every four hours) and lido\milanta\bel(c1 cocktail)soln every eight hours, which is making me have diarhea. The diet for diverticulitis is totally different, but I took imodium because of how bad it was. Any suggestions about what food I should be trying to eat? I have been eating bananas, boiled chicken and rice but would like to have something else to add.I don't have an android device and my computer is old so I am staying here to get an answer.

Brief Answer:
Low fibre diet for diverticulitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
It's really tricky to handle IBS and diverticulitis together.
Basically to have low fibre food like white bread, pasta, rice to stop diarrhoea.
pulp of fruits avoid skin. canned and cooked vegetables...egg fish and poultry are ok. Fruit juice helps.
Avoid gassy foods like cabbage, Brussels sprouts, celery.
Low fibre cereals are recommended.

The information on your site for diverticulitis diet shows high fiber diet. Obviously this would be after the diarrhoea subsides. Sounds like I may need a referral to a dietitian?

Brief Answer:
Low Fibre diet for active symptoms

Detailed Answer:
While there is active diverticulitis (diarrhoea) the diet has to be low fibre as mentioned above. If the inflammation subsides that can be checked with blood test ESR / CRP... and few clinical symptoms you can resume high fibre diet.
