Question: For the past few month I have been suffering from knee pain when I put weight on it. It is the left knee just above and behind the knee cap. I have had a cortisone injection that worked for a while but now the pain is back.

Brief Answer:
Early osteoarthritis-patellofemoral

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I concluded that you may be suffering from early osteoarthritis specially patellofemoral as pain is just above and behind knee cap. Another possibility is chondromalacia patella, it is softening of articular cartilage of patella. Osteoarthritis is confirmed by standing x-rays of both knee -AP and Lateral view.
Treatment of both the condition is similar.
1.Quadriceps exercises are beneficial.
2.Hot fomentation give relief and is soothing.
3.Analgesics such as Diclofenac are given for pain relief.
4.Diacerine prevents cartilage destruction and glucasamine sulfate help in regeneration of cartilage. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Third possibility if you have only soft tissue pain over quadriceps tendon(No bony pain) just above knee cap, then it may be quadriceps tendinitis. Its treatment is cortisone shot, rest and analgesics.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Wishing you good health.
Take care.
