Suggest Treatment For Injury On The Calf Muscles

Posted on Thu, 4 May 2017
Question: My 34 year old son just injured his calf muscle while playing volley ball, as he was coming down from a jump.
the entire group as well as him heard a loud "pop", and he went down to the floor. He is quite active, so his calves are very well developed, but the right one is much larger now than left, he cannot walk on it without a lot of pain, although he made it to his car in parking lot by himself. The emergency room where they'll only give him an ace bandage & crutches & charge him a few thousand, or follow RICE and see how he feels in morning? I think that him making it to parking lot by himself hopefully indicates it's not a 3rd degree tear...

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a second degree muscle tear.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Your son has injured his calf muscle- likely to be a tear. This can be a muscle tear - most likely a second degree with a hematoma. Rest and elevation will help in decreasing the swelling. The extent of tear can be evaluated only after an MR scan. He can take a mild pain killer like Motrin for relief. Do consult an orthopedician for MR scan and a direct examination. t can take 3-4 wees of rest for the tear to heal.
I hope this answers your query.
