Brief Answer: Two scenarios can happen Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic. Two life threatening clinical scenarios can happen after ingestion of pain thinners. One is aspiration pneumonitis and second is methemoglbinemia (happens rarely). Since the paint thinners spread fast over the mucosa, it may spread to lungs causing aspiration pneumonitis. The symptoms include persistent cough, vomiting, bluish discoloration of skin, etc. It causes respiratory distress and hypoxia (low blood oxygen levels). Methemoglobinemia is formation of methemoglobin in blood. The symptoms include bluish discoloration of skin, headache, dizziness, high pulse rate, muscle cramps, weakness, etc. In your baby's case, it seems that she has some cough due to irritation of respiratory mucosa from thinner. 50 ml may not have caused a lot of damage and she may recover soon. Anyways antibiotics or steroids will not work. If the symptoms are bad she will need to be admitted to the hospital. The following investigations are needed to know the status of patient: chest x-ray, arterial blood gases, methemoglobin levels, complete blood count, liver function tests, serum electrolytes, oximetry, MRI (if neurological symptoms present). The next best step would be to get the investigations done under medical supervision. Hope it helps. Dr Vaishalee

Brief Answer: The reports are normal except hemoglobin Detailed Answer: Hi again The reports are normal except for low Hb. The chest X-ray does not show signs of aspiration pneumonitis. Since your kid is weak, I would suggest you to get the arterial blood gases and methemoglobin levels. If these come back normal then there is not much to worry. MEGA-CV is antibiotic and will not be effective. Hope it helps. Dr Vaishalee
