Posted on Sat, 17 Jan 2015
Question: I have a strange lump behind my right tonsil, it has some red on it like it's inflamed and my tonsil looks like a vein popped with two long bloody red lines in front of it; when i pressed on my tobsil to see if it was a stone this thick white smelly liquid came out! I really have no idea where it even came from I have a little drainage but nothing terrible. What is happening to my throat!? It hurts to breathe and swallow now.

Brief Answer:
Either a normal tonsil with deep crypt or a granulation tissue...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query. I do understand your concern; I will try my best to help you with this problem.

According to the description given by you, I do feel, the lump could be either the tonsillar tissue with a deep groove in between or a granulation tissue. If you can post me the photograph of the same, I can help you in a better way.

The smell liquid is the normal secretions associated with the food material, present inside the crypts of the tonsil. Do not worry! It is not something dangerous. Do not attempt to milk the tonsils. Tonsil is very sensitive and richly supplied with blood. Any minor trauma can cause bleeding from the tonsil.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water. Warm water reduces the congestion over the tonsil and thus the pain.
2. Try using povidone iodine throat gargles or spray. This will reduce the bacterial growth and inflammation.
3. OTC pain relievers such as ibuprofen or diclofenac are sufficient enough to take care of the inflammation.
4. Avoid chilled food and beverages, smoking, coffee, if any.

With the above measures you should be alright. Please post the images of the tonsil.

Hope I answered your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.
