Suggest Treatment For Infection Over The Site Of Skin Biopsy

Posted on Wed, 18 Jun 2014
Question: I had a skin biopsy last Wednesday. Now I have an infection at the site of this biopsy. I can't get antibiotics until tomorrow. The area around the site keeps getting redder and there is pus. Is it alright to wait until tomorrow? The redness has spread more and the area is slightly swollen? Should I go to the emergency room?

Brief Answer:
Infected wound, need for antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concern regarding your skin problem and I hope I am able to help you in the same .
Since you have seemingly developed an infection over the site of skin biopsy, you should immediately start with application of an antibiotic cream like neosporin or mupirocin over the affected areas twice a day.

In case you have been applying an antibiotic cream already and still have developed redness and swelling, then it surely would not be a good idea to sit and wait. I would like you to be started on antibiotics early after a culture sample is taken. Visiting ER would be worthwhile if you are unable to contact your treating doctor for a prescription.

In the meanwhile I would start you on anti inflammatory agent like paracetamol twice a day . This will help in bringing down the associated pain and swelling .
