Question: my son stepped on something about a month ago. it turned into a callus with a small black dot. his pediatrician took an xray and saw a foreign object. we were referred to a pediatric surgeon to get it out and his surgery isn't scheduled for another week and a half. problem is the black dot more than doubled in size and i'm getting worried. my son says it doesn't hurt him. should I be afraid of infection, gangrene, etc...?

Brief Answer:
Yes you need to treat immediately

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
I have seen the attached picture.

Definitely the spot is infected with surrounding redness.
It needs immediate attention.

I usually prescribe antiseptics like fusidic acid ointment along with oral antibiotics like amoxicillin for a few days before surgery.

You need to take him to your pediatrician or ER to get him prioritised.
If required your pediatrician of surgeon might remove it sooner.
Wishing your son good health and speedy recovery.

It's almost 2am. Should I take him straight to the emergency room or call his surgeon around 8 in the morning?
