Suggest Treatment For Increased Weight Gain And Low Energy Level

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jan 2016
Question: I am currently struggling with my weight which is causing ongoing issues with my knees, legs and energy levels. I am currently weighing 320 pounds...I am 5'9. I do not exercise due to low energy levels and pain in knee. I have not always been this size...I gained this weight over a period of 3 years...a total of 100 pounds. I have a high craving for sugar and late night snacking. I have tried phentermine and other OTC weight loss supplements also B12 injections and supplements with no visible results. Any recommendations for someone who has a struggle with weight and energy?

Brief Answer:
need further details

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for contacting Ayurveda with your health concern and prior to suggesting the appropriate dietary regime and lifestyle management do let me know about following:

1. Are medical reasons of weight gain like: hypothyroidism with PCOS, diabetes, depression, stress, digestive problem [constipation, ulcer], long term steroid use,use of birth control pill, high cholesterol, sedentary life style are excluded or not?

2. 320 pounds [approximately 145 Kg] means you are overweight [obese class III] which is putting too much of pressure on your back [back pain] and knees [knee pain] since these are two important anatomical parts where the weight of the body is distributed.

PS. at your age [42 years] ideal weight would be 145 pound [approx. 67-68 Kg]

3. Is late night craving due to loneliness, frustration, grief, poor nutrition, irregular meal pattern, insomnia?

4. There is no magic pill in any system of medicine which can help you in reducing weight without the help of lifestyle and dietary modification along with exercise schedule, although taking tablet [phenteramine/OTC products] can be shortcut to success but not a permanent cure, because it might not be approved by any governing body (like FDA) and also because of the undesirable side effects of the tablet like increased heart rate, stomach irritation, irritability and interaction with prescription drugs.

Do let me know about above questionnaire so that those things are kept in mind before incorporating the necessary diet and lifestyle schedule in your day to day activities.

I have been diagnosed with depression in the past but declined medication....I do not and have not been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, diabetes, I do have a stressful life and work environment...I have a sedentary lifestyle completely..I sit for 8-9 hours a day and do very little walking....I do not have birth control pills...I got a tuba ligation done in 1997...My weight has been elevated since then actually but I use to be able to lose it and maintain a healthier weight. The light night cravings may be associated with a very irregular schedule...I am up late nights may be a little bit of insomnia. I have severe back pain daily. I don't want to be this way I really want to do better but I don't know how. I have a very difficult time with eating...I don't have the ability to cook and prepare anything daily so I do eat out a lot. I have looked over symptoms for hypothyroidism and I do have a lot of the symptoms but I am always told that my levels are good. I am not sure why I can't lose any weight. I have tried eating better and still nothing changes. My current waist size is 53 inches...my stomach is large as well as all other areas. I don't like taking traditional medication. I am really wanting to continue with homeopath options

Brief Answer:
Lifestyle Management and Opinion is necessary

Detailed Answer:
Dear
Thanks for reverting back

1. Since you are more interested in homeopath medicines you may contact a qualified homeopath doctor near your city/town or can find one on this forum under (Ask a Homeopath Specialist), in the mean time I'll provide you with Lifestyle Management.

2. It is a good idea to seek an opinion of Endocrinologist regarding any hormonal disturbance.

3. DIETARY AND LIFESTYLE CHANGES

1. There is a limit to how much one can exercise every day. An average (non athlete) person cannot run or exercise vigorously for more than 30 minutes i.e. you cannot burn more than 300 calories through EXERCISE everyday! So it is important to control the tongue, along with whatever exercise you do:

½ hour of walking burn 130 calories

½ hour of jogging/running burn 300-350 calories

½ hour of swimming burn 250 calories

½ hour of cycling burn 150 calories

½ hour of aerobic exercise burn 250 calories

½ hour of light exercise like writing/driving burn 50 calories

i.e. if you don’t exercise you consume about 2000-2500 calories per day. To this you Add any of the above exercise protocol to consume more calories, and keep your calorie consumption below 2000 per day and you will be losing weight

4. Tips on Eating: Starvation is not the right way to loose weight. Take the right type of diet and eat heartily:

i. AVOID:

.sedentary lifestyle, day time sleeping after meals, newly harvested rice, curd, butter, ghee, cheese, cream, chocolates, cakes, pastries, ice-creams, XXXXXXX

. oils should be reduced to minimum, avoid deep fried foods like puries, bhujees, potato chips.

.avoid potatoes, sweet potatoes, beets, yam, nuts, fruits with sweet pulp like XXXXXXX chickoos, bananas and grapes.

. Avoid processed and tinned foods, opt for fresh foods

. Drinking cold water after exercise.

. Eliminate all cold food and drink; you should eat nothing that is refrigerator cold.

ii. WHAT TO EAT:

.start the meal with large bowl of thin soup, followed by good volume of salads prepared with green vegetables (cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, cucumber, sprouted pulses). This will prevent you from taking extra servings of the meals. Drink plenty of water and diluted buttermilk.

.Avoid rice, take roti or phulka, without oil or ghee. The bhaji servings should be prepared from green leafy vegetables, onions , cauliflower’s,lady’s finger, radish, turnips, mushrooms, sprouted pulses. Oil may be substituted by gravy of tomato, onion, garlic, and ginger, in the curry or bhaji for taste.

. For morning and evening snacks, take recommended fruits, vegetables and low fat (skimmed) milk, black tea without sugar has negligible calories.

. Carbohydrates: fat requires carbohydrates to burn, so take them in moderation like grains.

5. DEVELOP HEALTHY EATING HABITS:

. Do not eat only 2 large meals a day. It leads to overeating due to hunger. Take snacks in between. It is advisable to eat a good breakfast and light lunch and dinner.

. Keep a quiet and pleasant atmosphere in the dining hall. Watching TV while eating, talking, arguments, angry discussions all lead to overeating g.

. Eat slowly; chewing each bite thoroughly gives a feeling of satiation.

. Do not be tempted to finish up the leftovers.

. Use nonstick cooking ware for cooking

 P.S.:

1. Ayurveda though is a slower process, but in case of weight loss: haste makes waste, so one has to be gradual in his approach.

2. It is wise to take vitamin and mineral supplementation during this period, to ensure that your body does not lack any nutrients
