Question: I have been taking benadryl for years and many other pm over-the-counter medications sometimes in the same dad u but not art the same time. I just learned last Saturday that this can cause urine problems. For the last four months, I've been having urine problems two times I had receive catheterization for inability to urinate at all. then after that I was able to go on my own. I've since stop both medication and did saw some slight improvement. I was wondering how long will it take for symptoms to improve completely if this outs a contribution to my problem. should my problems have been going within right days our it might take longer for symptoms to leave and urination to return to normal

Brief Answer:
Anatomical causes should be evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Benadryl i.e Diphenhydramine can relax the bladder extensively. Other causes related to anatomy including stones, strictures and obstruction should be ruled out as benedryl alone after stopping should have caused these symptoms to reverse. I would advise you to consult a urologist who may advise urinalysis, culture sensitivity, cystometric studies and Ultrasound abdomen pelvis to find possible causes for your presentation.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

Hello.

No, the probability is quite low for it to be a malignancy. However one can only be more certain if the imaging investigations and other tests are clear.

Thanks.

I have an appointment with the urologist Thursday. I just don't understand why the situation goes and comes. There are also times when it feels like I have an over active bladder because I use the bathroom frequently and small amounts come out. I also have leakage from time to time............no UTI......

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

I am sorry for your distress. Its likely to be urge incontinence but that is the reason, I mentioned cystometric studies that would measure the pressure changes in the bladder to determine if its irritable bladder syndrome or not. Try to avoid caffeinated drinks. Kegel exercises to strengthen pelvic floor muscles and anticholinergic medication may also be advised that relax the detrusor muscle of the bladder.

Thanks
