Suggest Treatment For Hypothyroidism While On Antihistamines

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Aug 2016
Question: Hi

I have recently been diagnosed with under active thyroid glands. I have recently started to try running again but when I try to push myself a little harder I get what perhaps seems like a heart palputation but only one and its in the centre of my chest around manubrium level. I also take anti histamine for allergies. I used to suffer years ago from hayfever but for the last few years my breathing has taken on for asthma related symptoms and a blocked nose. I'm a 45 year old male and have kept myself fit for many years, non smoker and only a few units of alcohol a week.

Brief Answer:
a few suggestions

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
First of all it takes a while for your thyroid hormone replacement to really start working. If you have fatigue while running this may be the cause. It could also be the cause of palpitations and should clear up in 4-6 weeks after the hormone becomes effective. You will need a follow up blood test to make sure you are on the correct dose of thyroid hormone replacement.
If you are having trouble with your breathing then you need to have a pulmonary function test done to rule out asthma or other breathing problems. This is a simple test where you blow into a machine and pulmonary function is measured. It can be done in a doctor's office and gives us much more information about your lungs than a chest xray.
I suggest that you continue your exercise but not push it for the next few weeks until the thyroid medicine has time to become effective.
If the palpitations persist you may need to see a cardiologist for a firm diagnosis.
Please let me know if you have further questions.
Regards,
Dr. Robinson
