Suggest Treatment For Hypomania And Depression

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Jun 2014
Question: I believe my son has hypo-mania disorder, however, he is in a holding cell in jail waiting to be evaluated by a state hospital. I don't trust the evaluation as he has passed it before. I think not knowing him and not talking to his family about his eratic behavior that it will be hard to get an accurate evaluation. He seems normal just talking to him but, then something triggers confusion, memory loss, heightened sexuality, hyper active behavior, stubborness, not thinking straight, anger, yelling, cussing, etc. It is hard to explain. None of these behaviors are like him. Do you go to the jails and evaluate people if they need a second opinion or if he is evaluated as competent. He is very intelligent and he is a preacher whose church fired him so the stress has been pretty unbareable! I am trying to get as much help as I can in case there is no help. We have a lawyer but, I feel like she does not understand his condition and he is in a bad environment for mental health.

In 2008 he went to ER for anxiety/depression/not sleeping.
Went to therapist and psychiatrist and was prescribed lexapro. took for 1 year.
2001-Sent to ER for a panic attack. Stayed in a Mental health center for counseling and treatment and was prescribed Zyprexa and took for 6 months.
2014- Last 4 weeks. mood swings, anxiety, angry outbursts, memory loss, confusion, sleeping pattern off. Symptoms of hyp0-mania. May 17th. tried talking him into treatment but refused. May 18th. agreed to go to ER and get evaluated but, was acting normal and was prescribed anxiety medicine and told to follow-up with health professional but refused. He is in jail for misdeamors for contacting church members when there was a no contact charge which started in January and he has been so stressed that he is having these symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
The symptoms that you are stating suggest that the patient could be having a hypomanic episode. However believe me its very difficult to diagnose a hypomania without the history given by the family members. The usual cheerful behaviour of a hypomanic patient can be very well be diagnosed as normal with out the significant history by family members.
Hypomania can present plenty of times as anxiety or depression or restlessness and need astute observation to identify that there is agross change from his normal behavior. You can ask your lawyer to request the evaluating authorities to seek collateral history from the family members before they commit to a diagnosis. I am sure the psychiatrist will not mind receiving add on information.
Kind regards
