Question: To the psychologist,

A few months ago I had written a question about bladder problem to a urologist, which you pointed out could be due to worrying.

I admit to having health worries. I was not always like that though. I believe it got worse after I got tinnitus 6 years ago, and then a few years ago I injured my back, herniated a disc, which still causes me great problems (pain, legs burning etc). I also later got disc bulges in my neck.

This has made me worry about other matters too, and I have underwent medical examinations which have been unnecessary (gastroscopy, colonoscopy, too many MRIs etc) because I worried about the worst case scenario.

The tinnitus I don't really worry about, because it is quite stable, but every time I do something that involves my back or neck, like lifting up something, bending in some way, I easily worry about worst case, and aggravate the pain more, because my mind focuses on it.
My mind often tells me to repeat the lifting several times, because I need to make sure what I did was not harmful, but this is likely to just make it worse.
Sometimes if I accidentally bump my head into a wall, I start to worry about internal brain bleeding, and I am tempted to do it again, just to make sure it is not harmful.
Internet is not a friend to me, because I always try to find my own diagnosis, and usually end up with the most serious one.

I don't have a stressful job, but I have to stand much, and I stress quite much, lately feel the pulse is higher than it should.

Hope you can give me some suggestions on how to change my thinking.
I don't wanna take any tablets. Lately I have been going to the gym more often, I think it can be good to run on crosstrainer machines, since normal jogging is not good for my back, due to the impact.

Many thinks in advance.

Brief Answer:
Positive thinking is effective.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXX
Thanks for the direct query
You have come to the right decision by taking the psychologist route.
I assure you the perfect remedial action.

You do suffer from hypochondriasis, which I had mentioned earlier and you do know. Hypochondriasis or hypochondria (sometimes referred to as health phobia or health anxiety) refers to excessive preoccupancy or worry about having a serious illness. This debilitating condition is the result of an inaccurate perception of the condition of body or mind despite the absence of an actual medical condition. Hypochondriacs become unduly alarmed about any physical or psychological symptoms they detect, no matter how minor the symptom may be, and are convinced that they have, or are about to be diagnosed with, a serious illness.

Secondly you also suffer from a mild to moderate problem of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts that produce uneasiness, apprehension, fear, or worry; by repetitive behaviors aimed at reducing the associated anxiety; or by a combination of such obsessions and compulsions.

Both of the above problems are related and based on Anxiety disorder. Cognitive behavioral therapy generally for anxiety disorder and specific behavioral modification for hypochondriasis and OCD should cure your problem.

Let me remind you, the duty of our mind is to THINK AND EXECUTE. You cannot stop it from thinking. Mind thinks even when we sleep. But we can decide what the mind should think. We can channelize thinking. For eg: A student who struggles for studying just a week before examinations. No other problems stop him. He channelizes all his thinking process to only once aim, because there is a compulsion. Another example: A child falls and bruises or cut its leg. But the child ignore the bruise or cut and carry-on playing. When the child stops the play, on seeing the wound he starts crying. Here the child is motivated to oversee the wound, blood and the pain because of his interesting commitment, that is playing.

The above examples are enough to see how our mind can be guided or channelized towards positive thinking. In so many places in our life, we do positive thinking and ignore the bad scenarios. For eg: In a crowded bus, we do receive pushes and punches. We are annoyed. But we overcome our annoyance and keep calm just because we know there is no use from getting annoyed. That is another lesson to be learned.

Human life is unpredictable. We see and Experience so many things which are negative. We understand the necessities of life whether positive or negative.
Human body is 100% associated with the circumstances and other lives available on earth. Let me assure you. DEATH IS CERTAIN. You know that. Everybody of the 60 billion people on the earth knows. How do they live? Positively?

Diseases are also such. You can try to control them, prevent them. But they are unpredictable. Why worry about unpredictable and loose our present day of life when we can predict happiness and allied peace of mind just by positive thinking and smiling?

We exercise, drink, eat, selectively. Do not indulge in addictive substances etc. We do all these just for making sure that we are safe. Still we cannot be sure about it. Can anybody do anything about it? That is life.

Understanding life is blessing. Once we understand the life as it is, we loose interest in negative thoughts, because even if we think negative, we cannot change the future. Over and above, along with the bleak future, we also douse our happiness today.

But with positive thinking and hope, we can live happily today and never worry about future.

To be specific. You need to keep all these things inside your mind and start thinking about how to be helpful to others, how to think positive, how to find happiness from everywhere etc. THESE ARE YOUR KARMA (DUTIES).

You are just 39. Diseases come and go. That is it. better lifestyle can prevent some but not all. The chapter you learned today is going to provide you peace of mind throughout your life.

Start with the following steps:

1. Exercise regularly outdoors. Outdoor exercises always gives you changing scenes and therefore keeps you engaged.

2. Make your work a passion. Passion makes you to enjoy the work even though it is mechanical. When you start enjoying your work, other thoughts should not come.

3. Whenever you sit, make it a habit to take deep breaths (not deep so as it hurts you). Slowly it shall become a practice.

4. Smile always. Talk to people and exchange regards. Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin. Together these three make us feel good. Smiling is a natural drug. Smiling helps the immune system to work better. When you smile, immune function improves possibly because you are more relaxed.

5. Try to be energetic always. Smiling always keeps you in good mood. You should just take effort to be active, other things shall be taken care of by the good mood itself.

6. Gaining knowledge from Internet is always good. But we should know what to accept and whatnot. You do have the capacity to do that. But you are faking ignorance to the point that you feel worried.

7. You should learn to relax, as I pointed earlier. Smiling and taking deep breath should help you relax. While on bed, before sleeping, close your eyes, take deep breath and start progressive relaxation. See (in your mind) each and every part of your body from toe to head, slowly, one by one and feel it being relaxed. This takes around 15 minutes and before reaching half, most probably you should sleep. Other wise complete it. You shall get good sleep, you shall get up fresh.

Follow these steps for a weeks time and come back. I shall prescribe next steps. In follow up please mention the efficacy (please be sincere) and also mention whether you believe in god or not.

God bless you.
