Posted on Thu, 2 Mar 2017
Question: I have been taking Diltiazen X-RAY 240 mg twice a day since 12/10/2016. There has been very little change in my blood pressure ( ranging between 160/ 88 to 200/90 ) my life style is normal ... Working out at CrossFit & yoga 5 days/week. Over the last 5-6 weeks I have an unexplained weight gain !? This is the only known change in my habits. There does not seem to be any able or finger swelling. What could be going on?

Brief Answer:
Diltiazem should be changed to other med like telmisartan

Detailed Answer:
hello,
In your case, i assume diltiazem was started for hypertension only. First thing is your diltiazem should be changed to other potent antihypertensive. It's not first choice and not a potent drug and also it's a probable cause of weight gain although there is no overt edema. You should also get thyroid test done.
You should be started drugs like telmisartan 40 mg and titrated according to response. Rest can be continued. Atria terpene you can stop after discussing with your doctor. Not need to worry as very good and effective med are available for hypertension. So you discuss these issues with your doctor and ask for change.
You should continue to have a healthy lifestyle like avoiding fatty, oily and high calorie diet. Have low salt diet and monitor blood pressure regularly thrice a day for one week then once or twice a week. If bp should not be more than 140/90 mmhg. Regular exercises like brisk walking, jogging according your capacity atleast 30 min a day and 5 days a week. Lots of green leafy vegetables, fruits, fish once or twice a week, avoid meat. Avoid smoking and alcohol if any. There shouldn't abdominal fat deposition or obesity. Get your lipid profile and sugars tested once..
