Suggest Treatment For Hives On Thighs
Question: I had what I believed to be hives break out from my thighs down. As the itching has started to subside, they seem to range from a purplish bruised hue to their normal pink/red hue as the day goes on, including swelling around my left ankle.
In the morning, they look less vibrant like they are fading somewhat. But by evening the itch comes back & they start to redden again. This started 9 days ago & haven't seemed to spread, but the inflammation & swelling on my left ankle/shin did widen a lot.
I am on my 2nd day of prednisone & awaiting blood test results. My doc "suspects" HSP, a skin condition that normally occurs in children *I am 39, & tells me it usually has to run its course.
Now I have been under a great amount of stress the better half of this year (spouse has stage 4 cancer).....could this be stress related hives from hell? My doc doesn't think it's hives.....thanks

Hives are usually evanescent i.e they last a short while (few hours) and resolve without a trace. On the other hand Vasculitis (e.g Henoch schoeinlein purpura) usually persists and may turn to a purplish hue with time and has a burning sensation rather than itching as a major complaint along with systemic symptoms like fever, joint pains, malaise, aches and pains, edema etc.
In your case it seems to be likely that it is kind of vasculitis (whether it is hsp or some other kind of vasculitis need to be investigated with e.g a skin biopsy)
