Question: My niece is experiencing hives over most of her body, some are raised and some appear like a bite of some sort. She has had a high fever for 48 hours, body aches, headache, fatigue and now a sore throat. She has been treated and diagnosed with lyme several years ago. Questioning need of treatment, could it me mono or most likely lyme?

Brief Answer:
Go in to be seen: rule out strep, mono, insect-borne infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It is hard to know without seeing and examining her. Various infections can cause a rash. With a high fever and sore throat, there is the possibility that it could be strep throat with a scarletinaform (Scarlet Fever) rash. So given all of these symptoms together, I think she should definitely be seen by a doctor and have her throat swabbed. Ask the doctor to swab for Strep, and also to do a test for Mono.

Lyme is less likely to cause a sore throat and high fever, but the doctor can check what type of rash she has, and when ordering the Mono test, can also get a Lyme test for new infection.

There are other causes of the symptoms she is having that can come from bites other than Lyme too - such as from mosquitoes - especially if she has multiple bites.

In addition, some upper respiratory viruses can cause a person to react with hives, but would not cause a bug bite appearance.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information. And after she is seen, I would be grateful for a follow up as to how she is doing.
