Posted on Sat, 13 Dec 2014
Question: I'm a 5'9" 145lb 56 year old male. I had my cholesterol checked for the first time and my bad cholesterol was quite high (4.1 in Canadian) despite the fact I eat a low fat diet. I eat almost no red meat, fried foods. I'm a long distance runner and my blood pressure is usually around 110/70. Can I still have hardening of the arteries?

Brief Answer:
Dislipidemia is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!

I read your query and understood your concern. Unfortunately dislipidemia and high cholesterol levels are an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (arterial hardness).

If you were my patient I would recommend to continue with the healthy lifestyle you already are doing and to start treatment with a statin (crestor) and fish oil. Discuss about this your doctor

Hope you will find this information helpful!
Wish you health!

Thank you for your answer. If your arteries are clogged doesn't your heart have to work harder to push the blood through the clogged arteries resulting in high blood pressure?
