Question: My wife age 40 experiences very sudden spikes in her blood pressure. Her BP cuff registered her last episode at 240 over 130. The cuff also read heartbeat irregular. These episodes used to last an hour or so at first, now they are lasting many hours and are a lot more frequent. She had been on a beta blocker last year but went off of it because of the side effects. She is also experiencing insomnia recently. She had a hysterectomy at age 26 and is not taking estrogen replacement. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Need to be started on different class of anti hypertensive medications.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Thanks for posting your query.

First of all I need to know what is her Blood pressure when there are no spikes .

Is she presently on any medications for controlling Blood pressure ?

Have you got any tests like Ambulatory Blood pressure monitoring for her ?

If she is not on any medications for Blood pressure control then she needs to be started immediately . If she is not tolerating beta blockers then she has to be put on other class of anti hypertensive medications.

Kindly revert back with details asked .

Regards.
