Question: Hello, I suffer from depression, anxiety, panic attacks and overall unwellness. I am 70 yrs. old. I am diabetic 2 with high blood pressure. My medication has just been changed. I am on effexor 2 tabs in am, apo gabapentin 3 tabs a day, hydromorph contin 6 mg 4 tabs a day, ritlan 20 mg. 6 pills a day, metformin 500 mg 1/2 pill twice a day, hydromorphone 4 mg 3 pills a day, multivitamin 1 a day, vitaminD3 4000 units a day, omega 3 2 tabs at lunch,NAC supremacy 600 mg 2 tabs at lunch, magnesium 200 mg. 1 tab at dinner, docusate and apo laptulose 4 tbsp. teviperidol .5 mg. at night, 2 clonazepam at night, crestor, pms trazodone 100 mg.at night. This week at my dr. visit because I am having so much anxiety, panic attacks, crying most of the day the doctor has taken me off wellbutrin, added 1/2 clonazepam in a.m and pm and added XXXXXXX clonidine 0.1 mg twice daily. I am concerned as to whether the XXXXXXX clonidine will help or hinder me because the internet say it is for high blood pressure (which I am already on olmetec for that and also I am presently on metformin for high blood sugar and am afraid that this new med will mess up my blood sugar levels. Can you confirm that the XXXXXXX clonidine is safe for me and also if you could tell me what this med is supposed to do for me. I read that it is for high blood pressure and to help with hot flashes (which I do not have) and for help with withdrawal from opiates which is not an issue for me. I have just recently occassionally use marijuana for some peace in my body and to help with anxiety, depression, and panic attacks. I can barely leave my house, have absolutely no energy or sense of well-being in my life. Could you please help me by answering my questions. Thank you for your kind assistance.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Yes, clonidine was developed as a high blood pressure medication, but is it also used frequently in the treatment of anxiety and panic attacks. This is a safe medication, it does not interact negatively with your other meds, and I would expect it would help you with anxiety. You will feel better!
