Question: So awhile back I was diagnosed with a hiatul hernia and gerd. The past 4 days I've been having burning pain in stomach and abdomen. Then my symptoms started under my left rib and moved to my lower back. Ive also had slight pain under my right rib too. I take nexium everyday and tried to take aleeve for the back pain. Didn't seem to work. I have really bad gas and sometimes can't poop when feel the urge to. This morning I woke up, no pain under rib or back pain, but a pain like I ran a lot (winded) in my left lower abdomen. Is this a sign of pancreatic cancer or just IBS,

Brief Answer:
not in keeping with pancreatic cancer

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Though the pancreas is part of the gastrointestinal system, it does not normally present with burning discomfort described, it is also not normally associated with bloating/gas.
Those are symptoms of GERD, hiatal hernia.

In most persons with pancreatic cancer there is a gradual onset of loss of appetite, weight loss, nausea, malaise ( general feeling of unwellness), fatigue , midepigastric pain( pain in the upper aspect of the abdomen, under where stomach is located), back pain).

Based on symptoms given, there is no indication of pancreatic cancer.

Aleve can cause gastritis in some persons so may be decreasing the effectiveness of the nexium.
In addition, nexium and the other drugs in that drug family take 5 to 7 days to have an effect if taken consistently.

This is because they do not do anything with the acid already present, they only prevent future acid production but the acid already there has to go , this takes a few days.

If you combine the nexium with pepcid or zantac for a few days, then this may help you.

You may also want to see if you are using any foods associated with increased gas production eg broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, beans, turnips, brussels sprouts, carbonated drinks, peaches, apples.

Spicy or acidic foods would also aggravate the reflux.

Pain in the lower abdomen is not a symptom that is normally seen in pancreatic cancer because the pancreas is not located in this area.
This can occur with bloating and also if there is any constipation.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

I had nagging pain right under my left rib and my left lower back. The back pain then turned into the entie lower back,an almost burning pain. Though I haven't lost my appetite I have lost weight. It could be from stress and my job (surveyor, walking up mountains all day) right now I still have the feeling of being winded under my left rib but further down, not just under the rib. Everything I read online states that under the left rib and back is attributed to the pancreas. I'm going to n make an appointment with my gastro Dr when I get back from vacation, just trying to put my mind at ease I guess. He did an endoscopy and colonoscopy and everything came back normal, minus some ulcers, that was less was than year ago.also did an ultra sound on stomach and nothing. is it my hiatul hernia that's causing me this pain? I also get really bad gas, foul smelling and can almost feel gas bouncing around in my insidesinsides.

Brief Answer:
may want to review abdominal ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
HI

The ultrasound of the abdomen may have also taken a look at the pancreas, if you have the report you can take a look to see if it is mentioned.
Abdominal ultrasounds normally review all or most of the structures in the abdomen.

As mentioned, back pain is a symptom that can occur with pancreatic cancer but normally in conjunction with the other symptoms

Hiatal hernia can worsen reflux symptoms but in most there are no other symptoms.
In the minority of persons, complications related to the hernia can occur.

The gas would be related to the GERD , use of any of the foods mentioned.
If you have any problems with constipation, it would also contribute to the problem.

He told me he found something on my kidney, it was smaller than the size of my pinky nail. Told me it didn't seem alarming. Now if he viewed the kidneys and stomach would he also have good view of the pancreas? Today the pain isn't as bad, but still feel slight pressure under left rib, front and back,

Brief Answer:
checked in most abdominal ultrasounds

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes, abdominal ultrasounds would normally include a look at the pancreas as well.

The kidneys and pancreas are in the back area of the abdomen so if he visualized and reported on the kidneys would have likely done the same for the pancreas.

If any thing else unclear, feel free to ask
