Brief Answer:
If hernia is seen only on ultrasound,no treatment is needed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist,i can understand your concern.

At your age,if a hernia is present and enlarged, you should get checked for B.P.E.
B.P.E. is benign prostate enlargement.
It will be seen partly, on Ultrasound of the abdomen.

If hernia is seen only on ultrasound, then you don't need to worry about it.

For surgery of hernia, apart from open operation, there's an endoscopic operation.
The operation is done with mesh placement in hernia repair.
Laser is not used for repair routinely.

Wish you well.

Can you pls elaborate more on this. are you suggesting for a new test named B.P.E.

we visited one hospital yesterday, Doctor there was suggesting for surgery and saying that hernia is not very large, but it is paining since last 6 months so we also want get rid of it(Surgery is the only option left as per the Doctor). he suggested two types of surgeries :- 1. Open opetaion :- 5-6 Stitches longer recovery time
2. LASER :-2-3 stitches faster recovery

attaching past reports herewith

Pls suggest way forward
Which surgery do you prefer , pro's and con's

Brief Answer:
Indication for surgery has to be decided first.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

It's good you have sent the scan reports.

The prostate gland isn't significantly enlarged.( B.P.E).

Now if the hernia is seen outside the abdomen and causing pain,it needs surgery.
If it's not seen outside the abdomen and symptomless,no surgery is indicated.

So your father will have to decide on this aspect.

Surgery between open and laporoscopy you've written, are true.
Open surgery will cause slightly more pain, than laporoscopic surgery.

Hope your doubts are cleared.
Feel free to ask any other doubt.

Hi Again

Actually we are unable to identify if the hernia is seen outside the abdomen( can you pls identify this with scanned reports i had uploaded yesterday) , but there is a slight pain and irritation felt by my father.

Other thing is we quickly want to take decision on which surgery should opt for. Any pro's and con's in both .

is the pain only thing which separates these two surgery

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Ultrasound scan doesn't show changes outside abdomen.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

The scan shows changes inside the abdomen, not outside it.
The hernia can be seen easily outside the abdomen,on it's surface.
It becomes very prominent on coughing.

Ask your father to cough with force, while you're watching his groin area.
He may lie down or stand and expose his groin area,up to the scrotum.

When he coughs, you should be able to see a prominent bulge, in the groin area.
If he has a visible bulge protruding out with coughing, that's a hernia.
It'll appear like a ball or bigger on coughing.!
You could take a photo at that time and post it here, for confirmation.

Main difference between the two types of surgery,is smaller wound and less pain.
Add to it,shorter hospital stay, general anesthesia and of course costlier operation.
That's about laporoscopic surgery.
The reverse is true for open operation, though not very significant.

Wishing your father good health.
