Question: Thought I had a cold, but that was early August and although runny nose has stopped still suffering with headaches, joint pain and fatigue and nausea, although it comes in waves...one hour fine and then low again? Please advise. I know usually my colds begin with a sore throat but have not had that symptom this time.

Brief Answer:
Routine screening blood work, and probably antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,

Lyme disease is a high possibility. Most people do not know they have a rash due to the location of the bite (IE back, legs, arms, neck, etc). Additionally, around 30% of people do not get the classical expansing rash at all. Headaches and joint pains are the most common symptoms of Lyme disease, but most people also complain of fatigue and "flu-like" symptoms. However, these symptoms are all common in mosquito, tick, and flea born diseases, as well as many viral illnesses. It is not uncommon to have these symptoms from just a viral infection which can sometimes last up to 4 weeks. Some people with lyme disease will also have palpations, chest pain, facial palsy, numbness/tingling, and conjunctivitis. Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis can also have these symptoms.

I would recommend see a physician to get routine screening body including inflammatory marks, lyme disease serology, blood cultures, EKG, rheumatoid arthritis panel, lupus serology. I would also recommend using insect repellents until tick season is over.

Treatment for lyme disease is generally 21 days of antibiotics. Some people will have post-treatment lyme disease syndrome which can last 6 months. Symptoms are fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches, and occasionally fevers.
