Question: My son had a football scrimmage and had a hard tackle. After the game we noted he had a red raised area on the left side of his head above his eyebrow. His coach noted his pupils were dilated but equal and he was a bit slow with reactions. He is only complaining of a headache and remembers the impact. Should I take him to the ER or just watch him and wake him every hour?

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

You have asked a rather difficult question. I understand your concern and this is how I would like you to tackle it

1. Tab acetaminophen will help relieve the headache
2. As per protocol every head injury will require a CT brain to rule out internal bleed, i recommend the same to you
3. If taking to the ER is difficult for any reason , I recommend that you monitor is mental status and alertness every hour. Look for confusion, change in behavior or consciousness. Extreme headache not getting relieved with medication is also another good indicator to approach the ER.
4. Let him avoid strenuous physical activity for a week

I hope I was of help, if you have any further queries please get back to me

Regards
