Posted on Thu, 1 Oct 2015
Question: Yes, thank you. My husband is in his late 40's. He works out and recently changed to a Vegan, high protein diet and has been lifting a lot of weight. He just realized last night, that he has a hard, painless, egg sized, lump on his upper right chest bone, just below the bottom of his neck. Color is normal. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
Lymph node, Seb cyst, lipoma, rare tumors of bone, muscles or so.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query for your husband.
Noted the history provided by you.
The commonest of such lumps which are painless, hard and egg sized due to either of the following:
Lymph node as it is noted yesterday night.
Sebaceous cyst or
lipoma.
There can be rare tumors of hte bone, muscles and so on.
This can be diagnosed/confirmed by:
Clinical evaluation and examination by a Surgeon- ENT or General
Ultrasonography.
FNAC to get a tissue diagnosis and
Excision helps in two ways:
1. The patient gets rid of the disease which is not a normal part of the body.
2. You get a confirmed diagnosis.

I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further relevant query if needed or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thank you. Are there lymph nodes on the breast bone/peck? Of course the concern is cancer, and I know, other than an actual doctors visit, we can not be 100% sure, but how urgent is it that he see a doctor? Are these things generally benign and will disappear on their own?

Not dire urgent, but as soon as possible, as is just noticed.

Detailed Answer:
I can understand, the concern about the cancer.
This is not that urgent, but earlier the better, Even just by confirming that this is not cancer helps to alleviate all the stress and anxiety.
There are no lymph nodes on the breast bone or Pec.
