Posted on Sat, 15 Apr 2017
Question: I have a history of gastritis and am not supposed to take certain pills. I recently was diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis and depression. I was prescribed Celebrex for my foot, and prozac for the depression. I also have been taking Protonix once a day. It was okay the first week, but this week I have been experiencing sharp pains in my stomach, and extremely bad nausea. I haven't been able to eat since Tuesday. I stopped taking all pills Wednesday. what can I do? I have to work, but I don't feel well enough.

Brief Answer:
Drug induced gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern for your symptoms.
1) Yes you must stop all possible medications which can aggravate the gastritis.
2) Celebrex is the culprit in your case and you must stop this.
3) Beside, you must start taking medication for acidity to treat gastritis, stop taking oily and spicy, overcooked or partially cooked food.
4) Some of suggestion to continue treatment for foot are as follow;
a) Continue Celebrex along with anti-acidity medication (Pantoprazole). Also take Celebrex only after meals.
b) consult your physician to discuss option about topical medication in form of patch through which steady amount of drug will be absorbed by skin and this will bypass alimentary tract.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!

should I be taking something besides the Protonix then? I thought that was an antacid? Also, my stomach hurts the worst when I eat. It hurts a little bit to drink, but is bearable. But when I eat it's awful.

Brief Answer:
Upgradation to Esomeprazole from Pantoprazole

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I apologize for missing this part of information from your first query.
If you are experiencing gastritis pain even after taking Pantoprazole then you should upgrade antacid medication to Esomeprazole from Protonix as Esomeprazole has longer duration of action than Pantoprazole.

One last thing. Is it possible that it could be anything else? My attacks happen about once a month, and I can't track whether it is triggered by a certain food. It seems completely random. The attacks last anywhere from one day to a week or more. Also, if it is just my gastritis, is there anything I can do without more prescriptions?

Brief Answer:
GERD might be possibility

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
1) Present symptoms look like due to medication.
2) If you experienced upper abdominal + center chest pain (burning type), burping, nausea then it might be related to reflux (GERD) than gastrtitis.
3) If you had upper-mid abdominal pain which was intensified after meals and associated with indigestion, then it might be due to gastritis.
In both these condition culprit is same, the stomach acid but it has unwanted actions at different locations. Therefore treatment will be same.
