Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: For some time i used to drink one energy drink at work. It caused me gastritis and oesophagitis so i stopped. I am on Nexium 40 for some months. It also cause me another symptoms which i left untreated. Every morning i have regular bowel movements but 1-2 hours later i have a a desperate need to go to the toilet again. This happens on my arrival at work which is very inconvenient. After that I am fine.
Any suggestions?

Brief Answer:
Lifestyle modification and stress reduction

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query. Your problem indeed seems to be due to gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux. Our gastrointestinal tract has a forward propulsive movement (peristalsis) that moves the food material forward as it is digested, absorbed and finally expelled as feces. If somehow this movement gets hampered, food along with the digestive juices would stagnate, stomach acid will reflux into the food pipe and on the other hand the bowel habits would not be proper.

In order to relieve yourself, you need to do the following:
* Avoid spicy food. Take small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps between meals.
* Avoid alcohol intake (if it a part of your habit).
* Take Nexium (esomeprazole) once daily before breakfast.
* Take plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as other sources of dietary fibers. Take fiber supplements like isabgol/psyllium husk or senna. I would insist you to increase your dietary fiber intake.
* Regular morning walk and exercise to keep the bowel movements proper.
* Take curd or yogurt on daily basis. It contains beneficial bacteria and should help.
* Yoga and meditation should help.

Hope that helps.

Let me know if I could help further.

Thank you very much for your thorough answer. My question is can I drink small quantities of alcohol like 2 glasses of wine once or twice a week?

Brief Answer:
Even if you take alcohol intermittently, the irritation would continue

Detailed Answer:
Alcohol is a gastric irritant. So, taking alcohol will only make your symptoms persist. The rest is upon you to decide.
