Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: I stay in XXXXXXX We went for travel and my daughter took outside water after which she fell sick. She is 10 years old. She had vomiting for 7 times 4 days back. She was given Zofer injection to stop vomiting. Then she started with loose motion and that continued for a couple of days more while Zanocin 200 has been applied along with PAN20. She says she has a burning sensation in her upper abdomen below her rib area and sometimes around the stomach. Now her stool has formed but the burning sensation in her stomach continues. Is her line of treatment correct? What infection she is having? And how long will this burning belly sensation stay? What exactly has happened with her?

Brief Answer:
gastritis and gastroenteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your history I understand that your daughter had bacterial infection of the stomach and intestine called gastroenteritis.
Though usually viral sometimes this can be bacterial the commonest being E coli from contaminated water and food associated with travel.
If stools are normal now then the infection is over.
The reason your daughter still has upper stomach pain is because of gastritis. This is an after effect of the infection.
Don't worry. It will settle soon.
I usually recommend sucralfate syrup 10 ml thrice daily for such patients in my clinic.
Complete rest of your medicines.
Wishing your child good health.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you very much for your diagnosis and the advices. She will be having her stool exam day after tomorrow and her medicine course will also complete as I expect the stool exam report to be in my hands by that day end. Can I then send you the scanned copy of the report that you can ascertain what exactly has happened and what medicines she should take to recover further and let me know please? As a father I will feel a bit relieved if I get some more advices from you on this on observation of the stool report from where you may get a closer picture of her disease and advise accordingly. Kindly let me know if you agree to this.
One last question Doctor.. she is extremely weak now. Is there anything that you may suggest to boost her energy level? Thank you.

Hi Doctor
I have uploaded both the full abdomen USG report and the stool report of my daughter. Kindly review them and please let me know if there is anything that I need to be concerned of and the treatment accordingly. My daughter is currently doing well, she is having hard stool, no vomits, energy level seems to have improved, the burning sensation in the belly also has subsided as she expressed to me. Only thing is that she is loosing her appetite and not wanting to eat. What should be done in that case? Also is she having worms? If so what needs to be done? Kindly advice. I thank you for all your valuable advises and she is having SKF-O Sucralfate as advised by you to yield very good results. Her gastric burning belly sensation has subsided. Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
reports are fine

Detailed Answer:
I had gone through the reports
Ultrasound is normal.
Stool tests reveal previous diarrhoea after effect.
No active infection currently.
Reports do not indicate worms.
I usually recommend Deworming with albendazole single dose every year in kids
You can deworm for sure.
Continue sucralfate for few more days.
Regards
