Suggest Treatment For Frequent Seizures Due To Recurrent Meningioma

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Dec 2014
Question: Hi,

My mom aged 46 years has undergone Craniotomy surgery twice within 18 months duration. First one on Aug'12 and the second one on May'14.

In the first Biopsy, tumor is recognised as WHO Grade-I Meningioma.
In Second Biopsy, tumor is recognised as WHO Grade-II Atypical Meningioma.

On observing the upgrading(from Grade-I to Grade-II) tumor within short span, Doctor suggested to go for Radiotherapy. So one of the Radiation Oncologist prescribed us to go for RapidArc Radiotherapy. Even after 2 months of the complete 30 radiation doses, i even doubt the presence of tumor, as mom is getting seizures frequently.

I just want to know is there any permanent cure for this type of recurrent meningiomas.

Any help/suggestion will really be appreciated and will mean us a lot. Thanks in Advance.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Complete cure is usually not possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mr XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your mother's symptoms, biopsy findings and current treatment.

Meningiomas are known to recur, and in this sense, complete cure can not be assured. This is because, these tumors can recur even after 10 years of normalcy.

At the same time, I would like to reassure you that Grade I and II tumors are not very aggressive and the chance of recurrence is not very high. Also, the risk of cancer is very low.

Also, there is no necessity that the upgradation will continue in future too. This means that the meningioma may remain in Stage II for long time.

Current treatment seems to be along correct lines.

Regarding seizures, they can occur due to a scar (of previous tumor, or formed due to radiation or previous surgery) and does not always mean that the tumor is still present. In any case, anti-seizure medications are required lifelong in this case.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
