Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: I am a 67 year old male in good health, however, for the past several months, I have msny times in the morning had flatulence that has been damp in my underwear. The dampness is not bowel related but appears to be sweat-like with no odor. IS it diet related? Age? It seems mostly in the morning. Also, I have several bowel movements in the morning from shortly after waking thru the next several hours.
I drink water daily plus metamucil. Any help? I would like to stop this from happening.

Brief Answer:
You might want to try anti-protozoals and PPI medicines.

Detailed Answer:
Hi!

I would strongly suggest that this could be the result of a protozoal infection. Such infections cause issues such as dampness and flatulence which are exactly the target symptoms that you are so vividly describing. Thus the first course of action is to get a stool and urine examination. It is painless, cheap, easy and quick. Based on this, we can recommend the best medication for you. There is another possibility. Excessive proton production in the the gastric tract can lead to such flatulence and dampness. The best treatment is an proton pump inhibitor like omeprazole or pantoprazole. These drugs are best taken a capsule a night after dinner and have a very strong positive effect on such problems.

I encourage you to share your opinions about this line of treatment.

Thanks,
Dr. Neel Kudchadkar.
