Question: My 7 year old son swallowed a Philips head drill bit March 24. April 7 he started running fever and throwing up, he is drink some fluids. But now he does not seem to want to eat. My daughter had a stomach vires March 26. Should I worry that the drill bit is blocked or is this more than likely that he now has the stomach vires?

Brief Answer:
Please take him in for exam and X-ray.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

If you don't know for sure whether the metal part was passed, I think it best to take him back in to be seen. In the ER they can listen to his bowel sounds with a stethescope (a partial blockage gives what we call "tinkles and rushes" sound heard with a stethescope), can feel his abdomen, and importantly, get another X-ray of his abdomen. As the part is metal, an X-ray will usually show where it is if it hasn't already passed, and can also show if there is obstruction.

It is also very possible that if he did keep in some of the Z-pack, that it has bothered his stomach. Azithromycin (the antibiotic in Z-pack) and other macrolide antibiotics can be irritating to the digestive tract, particularly the stomach. Z-pack is supposed to be reserved for pneumonia, and persistent bacterial infections. Not for colds or influenza (flu), which are caused by viruses. So I question whether he needs the Z-pack.

But given his recent history, an exam and X-ray are needed here.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
