Suggest Treatment For Fever And Painful Red Spots On Feet And Hands

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Aug 2015
Question: My 20 year old daughter had a fever and now extremely painful and excruciatingly itchy red spots on feet and hands. No blisters, and no mouth ulcers.

I am her mother and am a nurse and cannot think what it could be other than hand foot mouth but there are no mouth ulcers or blisters at this point. She got sick after traveling from NC to XXXXXXX for a church council meeting held yearly. She has been in a hotel room most of the time while husband attends meetings and services. He comes to the room several times a day because they have a 6 week old baby. If it is a virus, baby has already been exposed and she has to take care of her. Most hand foot mouth descriptions do not include itchiness and the itching is excruciating. She has cried all day due to pain and itching. If its a virus, no cure but are we sure it is? They are red and you can feel a slight bump. No rings around them or pus etc.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have carefully gone through the details that you have provided and understand your concerns. I do not think that it is due to some virus but I would really appreciate if you could upload an image of the affected areas. You can do so using the facility on the upper right of this page. It will help me to identify the cause. Based on that I can suggest what necessarily needs to be done.
I would await your response.

Brief Answer:
Antiallergics need to be given.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I have checked the image and it is good enough. Going by the looks it seems to be an allergic reaction to something. However, there can be a wide array of viral infections that could present with similar rashes. As of now I would suggest:
* Application of calamine lotion topically over the affected areas.
* Taking of cetirizine tablet once daily for a few days.
* Acetaminophen/tylenol can be taken to reduce pain.
* Nothing specific needs to be done as viral infections are self containing in nature and would soon start to resolve in a few days.

Regards
