Question: I am 62, overweight, 190 pounds 5.2 tall, on metformin for six months 500 mg twice a day. On lisinopril 10 mg. my liver enzymes are increasing, hepatitis ruled out so I'm told, is it possible the metformin is causing increase in liver enzymes, or because body fat exceeds 30% ? I am exercising and trying hard to reverse this condition. Did lose 12 pounds since Oct

Brief Answer:
Fatty Liver disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting your query.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

The most common cause of raise in the liver enzymes is fatty liver disease.
Since you are overweight, it is very much likely that you have fatty liver disease too. This can be confirmed with an ultrasound scan of the abdomen.

I presume you do not consume alcohol.

The first step in the treatment of fatty liver disease is weight reduction which you have been trying. Metformin is also prescribed. This is not however the cause for the raise in liver enzymes.

I hope that answers your query.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Dr.Barani
