Suggest treatment for fatigue, headaches and throat irritation

Posted on Wed, 9 Aug 2017 in Brain and Spine
Question: I've had persistent symptoms for about a week now. The biggest symptom is neck muscle soreness that is most prominent when I move my head backwards. Moving my head forward or sideways does not cause any pain. But backwards is very tender and sore. I have also getting very fatigued throughout the day. I also have been having a consistent irritated throat (but not really sore or painful). Additionally, brief headaches come and go. Just today, I woke up with a tenderness on my left temple. It causes a pain when lightly pressing on it. I did not injure or hit my head there in any way. I did visit the urgent care doctor before this new symptom and was tested for both mono and strep, which came back negative. She believed I had some kind of light viral infection that could last up to a couple weeks. This new symptom though has me worried I have temporal arteritis. Should I arrange a follow up? Or am I just being an alarmist?

Brief Answer:
temporal arteritis is extremely rare for patients below 50 years of age

Detailed Answer:

although I don't have a solid explanation for your symptoms (the 'light viral infection' sounds OK though), I can say that temporal arteritis would have been a big XXXXXXX because it's very very rare in patients of your age. I suppose the doctor checked for neck stiffness, so I'm not very worried for serious disorders. If your symptoms persist and no adequate cause can explain them, then further testing might be required. I would have started investigation for anything that lasted for more than 7-10 days because most viral diseases usually last for less or at least have significantly improved by then.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind regards!
