Suggest Treatment For Elevated Levels Of Iron, And Acid In Stomach

default
Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: Hi. I've had a gallbladder surgery in April 2014. Since then I've not felt well. I've had blood work done and was told: my iron is elevated (have to stay away from red meat), Had endoscopy done and was told: The acid in my stomach is elevated. Took pills and it helped but after 3 months I feel the acid is back. I've had MRI,Sonogram & other tests done and everything seems fine. For the last 2 weeks my stomach swells (especially lower abdomen). It is very uncomfortable for I feel pressure like I have to go to the bathroom.
Additionally, I feel pain on my left side. It hurts for about 2 minutes and then goes away. I am bloated every day.
My gastroenterologist said that that I have bacteria in my stomach and prescribed 2 week treatment with 8 antibiotics a day. I was worried these antibiotics will do a number on my liver but my insurance does not cover this medication so I don't know what can be done instead.
Someone please help?

Brief Answer:
Take the anti H pylori regimen

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on healthcaremagic.
I have gone through the details provided by you.
It seems that you are suffering from gastritis which was detected on endoscopy and is responsible for your feeling bloated as well as the intermittent transient left sided pain that you are talking about.

Most often gastritis is associated with presence of bacteria called Helicobacter pylori which needs to be treated with a proper course of multiple antibiotics which are also available in combo-packs like HPKit and needs to be taken for 10-14 days. Discuss about this with your doctor. Even if your insurance does not cover for it, you still need to go for it as it is essential. I would not suggest you to avert it just because it would cost you money.

Do not worry about liver damage or the number of antibiotics and the high dose to be consumed. The risk reward ratio still stands in favor.

General measures that you need to take consist of small but frequent meals and avoiding spicy food. You also need to take a high fiber diet to regularize your bowel habits which is essential to reduce your discomfort. But I would strongly suggest that you take the requisite medication.
