Suggest Treatment For Elevated PSA Levels

Question: HI

I have had a PSA of about 5.3 for 2 or 3 years. Dr's tried 3 rounds of antibiotics and one of Cipro in hopes of eliminating symptoms of prostatitis. The symptoms have decreased but my PSA is still at 5.2. I have very very mild tingling in my penis after going to the bathroom at night. My effective bladder volume is about 500ml - when I was in my 40s it was 600ml. My DRE seemed fine. The doctor is sending me for a biopsy but the appointment is not for 2 months. My brother and an uncle and perhaps grandfather had prostate cancer. Should I be worried about waiting 2 months. Should I possibly go to the US and get one earlier (I am in Canada). The doctor thinks there is a 30% chance I have cancer. What is your opinion? What should I do? Thanks

Brief Answer:
There is no harm i waiting for 2-3 months for biopsy to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query .

Based on the facts that your Digital Rectal Examination is normal the raised PSA 5.2 can be due to enlarged prostate .

However there is a standard protocol accepted all over the world that says PSA above 4 should be considered to be due to cancer of prostate unless proved otherwise by doing a prostate biopsy .Hence with PSA of 5.2 you need to get prostate biopsy done .

Since prostate cancer is very very slow growing cancer in nature there is no harm in waiting for 2 months when you have been given appointment for scheduled biopsy procedure .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions,I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.
