Suggest Treatment For Elbow Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: Hello. I read Dr. Stanko's answer on the left elbow/arm pain. I experience this, it has been about 2-3 weeks and it feels like maybe I banged the bone on the top of my forearm at the elbow joint, but no bruise and no swelling. I did injure my neck a little over a year ago, I experienced numbness in my left arm/hand and then tingling. Is it possible this elbow pain is related? I have no heart problems, BP is fine. I have very bad arthritis/pain in my neck due to injuring it overseas in the military, and now I'm concerned it might be causing this elbow pain. Almost like someone hit me on that bone with a hammer, and if I bang it accidentally on something it really hurts. But, the main problem is it is a dull aching that doesn't go away like a bruise would. Thank you! XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Your elbow pain can be due to neck issue

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case and I think that your neck injury with spondylitis is causing this elbow pain. There are nerves in the neck which supplies to shoulder, arm, elbow and hand. when there is disc herniation in the neck than there nerve get compressed and complains of such pain with tingling and numbness. Your pain is also matching with these criteria. Before I advised you any further I would like to know little detail of your illness.
1.Are you also having pain in neck?
2.Do you also have Diabetes or Thyroid?
3.Do you play any game, watch TV or laptop for long time or travel a lot?
4.Along with pain in arm do you feel dizziness or vertigo?
Please send me answers of these questions. I will try my best to help you.

Hi Doctor,
Thank you for your answer.
1. Yes, I am having some pain in my neck, like if I turn around to see where I am backing up a car in reverse, it hurts very very much. So much that when I turn forward again, I have to breathe and relax it and just try to let the pain subside.
2. I don't have diabetes or Thyroid disease, although my family has a history of diabetes and I try to watch what I eat so it is healthy and not too much sugar.
3. No because the pain is in my left elbow, and I am right handed. I haven't traveled much lately, but while driving I do try to put my arm in a comfortable position, sometimes even on a pillow.
4. no dizziness or vertigo at all.

At first I thought I had bursitis, but that would be more in the joint and the end of my elbow, this is in the joint at the top of the elbow, like if my arm were straight out in front of me, and I bent it toward my chest it would be on the top. Very much tenderness when I lift or try to grab something by extending my arm.
Thanks again, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
It can be tennis elbow or cervical spondylitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for reply. I have studied your case and I think that you might be having one of these condition or may be both.
1.Tennis elbow- pain on outer side of elbow, specially on extension. It is mostly at point which you have described. It can be diagnosed by a orthopaedic doctor. treatment is hot water fomentation, tennis elbow band or steroid injection at inflamed side.
2.Cervical spondylitis- In this condition there is nerve compression in the neck. it can be treated with physiotherapy and tablets.
To confirm the diagnosis you need to visit a orthoapaedic doctor. He may advised you to get elbow or neck x ray to confirm the diagnosis.
I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
