Question: My Son is 10.5 year old and he is having dry cough from last 7-8 days. Local doctor has prescribed following medicines 1.     Montair LC Kid (Levocetirizine + Montelukast) – 1 tab. At night 2.     Otrivin 0.05% paediatric nasal spray – 2 drops a 3 times a day 3.     Ascoril LS + (Levosalbutamol + Ambroxol + Guaiphenesin) – 2.5 ml 2 times a day Doctor said that his chest and throat is clear hence no need for antibiotics. He is on medication from 4 days but his dry cough is not reducing. He is sleeping well at night and completely active throughout the day. My question is above medicine/dosages are fine for his symptom’s. Do you think Ascoril LS + 2.5 is correct?

Brief Answer:
The dose of Ascoril ls is low according to the age

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for asking on this platform

I have gone through the details and do understand your concern.
As per your history cough and cold is there for 7-8days and not associated with fever.
Here I agree with your doctor that antibiotic is not needed. In most of the cases cough and cold occur due to viral infection or some allergy.Cough may persist for 10-14 days and only symptomatic treatment is needed.
In bacterial infection fever persists for more than 72 hours with associated swallowing difficulty and poor general condition which needs antibiotic.

Montair LC kid contains montelukast and cetrizine which act as an anti allergic and helps in relieving cough. The dose for this age is 5 mg once a day.Otrivin nasal spray contains decongestant and helps in relieving nasal blockade and associated discomfort.
The dosing of both these medications are appropriate for age.
The ascoril ls contains 0.5 ml of levosalbutamol per 5 ml which is a bronchodilator (relieves airway spasm). The dosing of ascoril ls depends on levosalbutamol and the dose is 0.025-0.2 mg/kg/dose and it can be given at an interval of 8 hours. So the dose would be 5 ml for 10 kg.
The average weight of 10 kg old child is 30-35 kg.The appropriate dose would be 7.5 ml three times a day.

I hope this helps.
I shall be glad to help you out in case you have any more queries.
Regards
