Suggest Treatment For Dry Cough And Bronchitis

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: I developed a cough over 3 weeks ago, mild dry, however, recently diagnosed with bronchitis, only been on biaxin for 7 days. Coughing was getting better, but over this weekend, deep cough, bringing up stuff, severe head pressure, not sleeping, temp averaging 95 to 97.6. Been taking mucinex dm, using albuterol inhaler and taking motrin. This developed 5 weeks after sinus surgery. ENT says sinuses clear of infection. I started to feel more human and better on Friday, but sudden turn for coughing episodes lasting long time causing to feel like I am pulling muscles. When walk around house, feel shallow breathing and can't catch breath. When breathing through mouth, slight rattling noise. At what point do I need another antibiotic, ride it out and for how long? Need chest X-ray. Thank you kindly.

Brief Answer:
Treat the cause. Cough is merely a symptom.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Your dry cough is basically triggered by three major causes.
1)Acid reflux
2)Sinusitis and recent sinus surgery
3)Bronchitis

You are taking prilosec for the foremost cause. It is not enough. Modifying diet and lifestyle, small frequent meals, avoiding spices, stimulants, coffee, chocolate, sauces, processed and canned foods etc and delaying laying down after the meal will help.

2) Sinus surgery has common sequelae and cough is one of them. Hot humid air to breath and nasal irrigation and all other home remedies which you are already doing will help and reliee the cough in a week or two. No worries its not an alarming sign.

3) Bronchitis itself with no other history of COPD can be connected to sinus surgery as the airways may be involved to the extent of alveoli sometimes like in your case. Antibiotics you had. RIght now you just need bronchodilators and mucolytics and symptomatic home remedies which you are already on.

Nutshell, Supportive care, diet lifestyle modifications and compliance with the medications will get you through. No worries cough is merely a symptom of underlying above mentioned three causes. Once those three are handled , your cough will wean off.

I hope it helps . Take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan
