Suggest Treatment For Dizziness, Nausea And Upset Stomach

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: My 14 year old son has had dizziness, nausea, and upset stomach issues for years to the point of having to give up his favorite sport (basketball). His pediatrician is disinterested in getting him better. She referred us to a Neurologist years ago who asked him about his fears. At the time I thought that made no sense, he was primarily dealing with dizziness after exercise. His problems have changed somewhat over the past 6 or 7 years to be more upset stomachs (especially in the morning). He does have anxiety issues too. I brought him to a councilor, but they wanted to refer me to an herbalist. The question is, how do I go about getting him diagnosed and helped. Should I get a new pediatrician, start with a new Neurologist, or a psychologist?

I have gone through your query and medical history and I totally understand your health concerns...
Stomach upset means what? Is it heart burn or stomach pain ? As you have already consulted pediatrician, he definitely had looked for the organic cause. But If he is still not improving then he should be seen by Gastroentrologist so that definitive cause can be pinpointed. Upper GI endoscopy should be done so that stomach can be viewed from inside to look for any pathology.
As far as anxiety is concerned , he definitely needs a psychiatrist. It is wise decision to change the psychiatrist so that he can be properly counselled and medicines can be started. As his Heart is fine so no need to fear about taking second opinion from psychiatrist.
Lastly, please do use the medications which would be prescribed.
Hope it helps

Thank you, but I was hoping for more detail on my approach. When you mention the Gastroenterologist you mean that he should definitely have a GI endoscopy to start out with correct? A psychiatrist would help unless his anxiety is caused by a legitimate feeling of sickness. He says he doesn't feel like eating, especially in the morning.

However, what I need is a starting place. I need to bring him to one person who can manage this process. Sort of like the Dr. House series. I can't reliably manage and consider all of the separate feedbacks to draw a conclusion. Please recommend a specialty that can do this. And please don't recommend his current or new pediatrician. They seem to have little time for anything but writing prescriptions. The offices are just too booked. Please help. Thanks!

Potential answers:

He needs to start out with a new Neurologist because. . .

He needs to start out with a Gastroenterologist because. . .

He needs to start out with a ? because. . .

Getting him to describe the various nature of his un-wellness has been difficult. He struggles to define it. He needs help doing this.

I really appreciate your follow up and totally understood your concerns....
After evaluating the entire history so far, it seems his major problem is related to stomach . once it is settled , rest of the problems will automatically get settle.
Embarking upon the GI endoscopy directly is not a wise step. He needs to be examined and evaluated first by Gastroentrologist , after then he will decide whether to scope him or not....
In my opinion consultation with Gastroentrologist is the right approach and you may need to see one....
Once he finds a pathology and treat it then no need to see psychiatrist...
Hope it helps
If you still have any query feel free to ask
