Question: Hi I am 43 I have been suffering with inbalance type dizziness for nearly 4 years... I have just been told it could be pri menopause and I have been getting really bad headaches as well...

My Headache starts at the back of the neck and then up into head its constantly there from wake up to bed time I am on Blood pressure medication and diet controlled diabetic... plus i suffer with inbalance when walking, excerise or even just standing up fine when sitting its like motion sickness as I have had nause really bad and anti nausea medication does help with the dizziness as well as nausa but does not fix it and I dont want to take that every day as it also makes me very tired...

I think the headache is tension headaches and the inbalance is it to caused by hormones in peri menopause what I want to know is is there anything I can get preferably over the counter in australia that can fix these headaches and dizziness etc

Brief Answer:
Dimehydrinate(dramamine) or Bonine ( meclizine) as OTC.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Dizziness and head ache in menopause can be due to hormonal imbalance. But it is not that specific for perimenopause and won't be that severe also. Therefore other possibilities should be considered
1. Tension head ache can be stimulated during perimenopause also. Tension head ache is felted as tightness or pain across forehead and back of neck and head.

2. If it is severe and associated with changing positions like while getting up then it can be due to Benign paroxysmal vertigo or due to neck problems like cervical spondylosis. Ear problems should be ruled out also.

3. ENT examination and vertigo maneuver tests should be done by an ENT specialist to rule out problems with ear and balancing organ.

4. Cervical spine x ray should be taken to rule out cervical spondylosis. In this case avoiding use of pillows while sleeping , neck exercises and physiotherapy will help to get you better.

If all these are clear then it could be the hormonal cause and you can go for Hormonal replacement therapy after consulting your gynecologist. Combined hormonal therapy with estrogen and progesterone will be better in such case.

Until then for dizziness and nausea you can use over the counter medications like Dimenhydrinate or Meclizine which is available as over the counter.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.

Sorry I should have added I have already eliminated Benign paroxysmal vertigo seen a nurologist and he did all those menovours. also had Xrays, CT and MRI all clear and numerous blood tests they have eliminated all possible major issues hence why the menopause but i don't want to take HRT I want natural and I did try estrogen and progesterone creams they did not help. My Dizziness gets worse when I excerise and i do keep up the water so not dehydration. I drink enough water hence why I thought tension headaches or vestibular migraines cant get Meclizine over the counter in Australia I have tried.

Brief Answer:
Dimenhydrinate (vertirosan) will be available.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

Thank you for your follow up query.

Dimenhydrnate (vertirosan) will be available in australia as over the counter.

In case of tension head ache stress relaxation exercises like breathing exercise will be helpful. You can sit relaxed and take deep breaths. This you can do a couple of times a day. Hot showers will be helpful also.

Chewing some almonds will be helpful also. Acetaminophen or over the counter analgesics like ibuprofen can be used if not relieving. Treatment with antidepressants can be considered if there is severe symptoms.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
